South Africa batter Quinton de Kock has confirmed that he will retire from one day internationals upon the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in India. His decision was confirmed by Cricket South Africa on September 5, the same day the team announced a 15-member squad for the impending World Cup.
Notably, de Kock has represented South Africa in 140 ODIs and has scored 5966 runs in the process. He has been one of the forces to reckon with in the limited-overs format and hence, it’s a massive blow for the Proteas, especially with him being only 30 years old. The stumper batter also announced his retirement from Test cricket in December 2021 and will be playing only one format going forward.
“Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from ODI cricket following the conclusion of the ICC @cricketworldcup in India,” Cricket South Africa tweeted confirming the new development.
“Quinton de Kock has been a really good servant to South African cricket. He set the benchmark with his attacking batting style and was a key member of the squad for a number of years," South Africa Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe was quoted as saying by the ICC.
"He also wore the captain’s armband and that is an honour that very few people get to hold. We understand his decision to step back from ODI cricket and we want to thank him for his service over the years. We wish him well for the future but still look forward to seeing him represent the Proteas in T20I cricket," he added.

Meanwhile, South Africa have announced their 15-member squad for the World Cup, which is slated to begin on October 5 in India. The young duo of Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis, who were part of the squad during the three-match series against Australia have failed to make the cut, and so did veteran Wayne Parnell, who is currently dealing with a shoulder injury.
On the other hand, Keshav Maharaj and Sisanda Magala, who were under threat of missing out, have recovered on time and have been named in the squad. Meanwhile, South Africa have named as many as eight World Cup debutants.
