Delhi and Railways were engaged in an encounter against each other during the seventh round of the 2024-25 edition of the Ranji Trophy. During Day 3 of the game which turned out to be the final one, former Indian domestic great, Rajat Bhatia, was involved in an amusing incident while commentating.
All of a sudden, he was captured recounting the quarrel which ensued between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir during the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League. What was hilarious was the manner in which he worded his comments, as well as the layers of sarcasm laced in his remarks.
"People know me largely because I stopped a fight between two people. They remember that about me, more than my performances. Now, one has a stand, the other has a pavilion (laughs). There are small confrontations in every team. Even in Delhi's Ranji team, there used to be some. But, you don't have to continue that. Today, one is the head coach and the other is a key part of the team," the former KKR all-rounder shared on air.
For the unversed, Kohli and Gambhir were involved in a heated confrontation at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru after the former was dismissed in the 10th over of the run-chase. Bhatia, a Delhiite as well, came to the rescue and acted as a mediator to quell the emotions of the two skippers. Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended up winning that game by eight wickets, with Gambhir's 59-run knock in the first innings going unrewarded.
Coming to the game between Delhi and Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the hosts ended up winning the contest by an innings and 19 runs. It wasn't a memorable return to India's premier domestic red-ball competition for the ace Indian batter. Kohli's stay at the crease lasted all of 15 deliveries, with his defence was breached all ends up.

Delhi ended their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign on a points' tally of 21 after seven games. The victory against Railways was only Delhi's second win of their season. Notably, this is Delhi's first knockout appearance in the Ranji Trophy since the 2017-18 edition, in which they finished runners-up of the competition.
