After the conclusion of the ODI World Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) advertised for various coaching positions, including batting coach, pace bowling coach, analyst, strength and conditioning coach and assistant coach. However, there was no advertisement for a spin bowling coach, which remained vacant after Rangana Herath’s contract came to an end. However, BCB officials are in no mood to part ways with the former Sri Lanka cricketer, as he has been offered a new role to develop spin bowling across the country.
As per reports, BCB understands that Herath’s role is very limited in the national team, where he usually gets to groom one or two spinners. Keeping that in mind, the governing body offered him the role of spin mentor, in which, the 45-year-old will work with spinners of various age groups and will spend at least 200 days with the cricketers.
Herath confirmed the new development and the position that has been offered to him by BCB. He mentioned of contacting his lawyer before making a final decision but stated that he has no problem taking up the role and is ready to pass his wisdom to all the players and other coaches. The former spinner added, saying that he is ‘keen’ and has no problem in spending 200 days in Bangladesh.
“I am pretty keen on working that way because, you know, since we don't have many spin bowling coaches, I'd like to get together with whoever we have at the moment to share my knowledge and expertise with the coaches as well as with the players,” Herath was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“That's what I always say (mentoring spinners of Bangladesh). Even in the last two and a half years, I worked with the national team and conducted three to four spin bowling camps. I would like to continue the same thing, and I am sure all the spinners will be on the same page. That's the main idea so that we can work together once we have a proper base,” he added.
