The sixth round of the Ranji Trophy witnessed a massive upset as the defending champions Mumbai faced a disappointing loss against Jammu and Kashmir. The star-studded Mumbai team was completely outplayed at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy at the BKC as they faced a five-wicket loss against the Paras Dogra-led side.
There were some big stars which featured in the Mumbai team in the form of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shreyas Iyer who failed to make an impact in the match and struggled against the J&K bowlers in the match.
However, there was still some drama that was caused after the match where the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) lodged a complaint with the BCCI on the quality of umpiring during the match. The state association's administrator Anil Gupta revealed this in a statement talking about two decisions where Abid Mushtaq was given lbw (Leg Before Wicket) when the ball seemed to have been pitching outside leg stump and Shreyas Iyer was given not out even despite clearly edging the ball.
“Yes, we have lodged an official complaint with the BCCI about the standard of umpiring in the match. We have pointed out a couple of decisions which went against the J&K team - Abid Mushtaq being given out lbw (off Mohit Avasthi) in the first innings, when the ball seemed to be have pitched outside the leg-stump, and Mumbai's middle-order batsman being given not out despite having clearly edged the ball. Since I was present at the ground and watching the match, I was dismayed by some of the umpiring decisions, which were quite appalling" Anil Gupta told The Times of India.
While the administrator aired out his frustration, J&K skipper Paras Dogra chose to play down the situation saying it is a part and parcel of the game but still brought up the DRS matter which is only used in the knockout games and acknowledged the mistakes made by the officials.
“This has been going on for years and there’s nothing much that we can do about it. Umpires are humans, after all and can make mistakes. But had they been a bit more attentive, it would have been fun. But it’s part and parcel of the game, and that’s why they got the DRS, It would have been a good experience to have DRS here, but we can’t control it since there are 10-15 games happening simultaneously. So, it does not make any difference since everybody is going through this,” the captain said.
