The Odisha versus Madhya Pradesh Group D clash in the Ranji Trophy took place at the Emerald High School Ground in Indore between January 12-15. Odisha bagged three points from the tie by virtue of a first-inning lead.
However, on the first morning of the encounter, not many would have predicted this result as Odisha slumped to 38/4 after Madhya Pradesh won the toss and opted to bowl first. It seemed that the hosts would wrap up the first innings in a hurry, but former Odisha captain Subhranshu Senapati had other ideas. He stitched useful partnerships with Rajesh Dhuper, Prayash Singh, and Suryakant Pradhan to take his team to 253/7.
Sunil Roul couldn't last long as Odisha lost their eighth wicket for 259. However, No. 10 batter Harshit Rathod provided Senapati great assistance as they forged a remarkable 238-run partnership to take Odisha to a position of strength. Senapati was eventually dismissed for a heroic knock of 277 off 487 balls, hitting 19 fours and 11 sixes during his marathon stay at the crease. This was his maiden first-class double-century.
No. 11 batter Jayanta Behera was the last Odisha batter dismissed in the first innings as Rathod remained stranded on 60 off 162 balls. The visitors finished with a mammoth score of 498. On the back of Harsh Gawli's 167, Madhya Pradesh finished on 318 in the first innings. They couldn't avoid follow-on as Odisha sent them in to bat again. In the second essay, Madhya Pradesh batted well as wicketkeeper-batter Himanshu Mantri scored a fluent century. They declared on 291/4 and set their opponents a target of 112.
Only 10 overs were possible in the fourth innings as Odisha finished at 38/1, content with the three points. Senapati remained unbeaten on 33 off 25 balls. He was fittingly adjudged Player of the Match.
Subhranshu Senapati went unsold in IPL 2024 auction
Senapati was part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He didn't get a game but he came out as a substitute fielder in quite a few matches and was quite lively in the field. Ahead of the 2024 IPL auction last month, CSK released him.
Senapati, who had a base price of INR 20 lakh, didn't get any takers at the auction. However, with consistent performances in the domestic circuit, the 27-year-old could get a call-up if any team requires a replacement in the cash-rich league.
