Ranji Trophy 2024: Mumbai Players pay tribute to former MCA President Manohar Joshi

Joshi passed away at around 3 AM on February 23 at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai due to a cardiac arrest.

Mumbai players paid tribute to former MCA (Mumbai Cricket Association) President Manohar Joshi on Friday, February 23 by wearing black armbands during the 2nd Quarter Final of Ranji Trophy 2024 against Baroda. Along with it, a two-minute silence was also observed ahead of the match at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC stadium.

Notably, Joshi passed away at around 3 AM on February 23 at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai due to a cardiac arrest as MCA Secretary Ajinkya Naik also expressed condolences on his demise. The mortal remains of Manohar Joshi will be cremated later in the day at the Dadar Shivaji Park Crematorium, where he will receive full state honours.

Coming back to Ranji Trophy 2024, Mumbai topped the Elite Group B by winning five out of the seven matches having 37 points to their name. In the ongoing quarter-final against Baroda, captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts got off to a good start to their innings as openers Prithvi Shaw (33 off 46) and Bhupen Lalwani (19 off 41) added 57 runs for the first wicket.

However, after a decent start, Mumbai lost Lalwani, Ajinkya Rahane (3 off 13), Shams Mulani (6 off 19) and Suryash Shedge (20 off 42) cheaply leaving them on 90/4. 18-year-old Musheer Khan, who’s also the brother of Sarfaraz Khan, played a brilliant knock of 85* (153) to rescue Mumbai innings.

Ajinkya Rahane's poor form continues

Meanwhile, Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane continued his poor form in the tournament getting dismissed for just 3. In the nine innings played in the tournament so far, Rahane has scored 115 runs at an average of 14.37 with one fifty to his name.

On the other hand, Bhupen Lalwani is the leading run-scorer of the side with 512 runs to his name from 12 innings at an average of 46.54 with one hundred and five fifties. Mohit Avasthi has topped the bowling charts with 31 wickets to his name from 12 innings at an average of 13.25 with three fifers to his name.
