Ranji Trophy 2024: Tanmay Agarwal breaks record for most sixes in a first-class innings

Hyderabad batter Tanmay Agarwal further shattered record books on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group fixture against Arunachal Pradesh as he hit the most sixes in a first-class innings. The 28-year-old earlier registered the fastest triple hundred in first-class cricket reaching the landmark in just 147 balls on Day 1.

Continuing his innings on the overnight score of 323* (160), Tanmay hit three more sixes to take his overall tally to 24 maximums leaving behind New Zealand’s Colin Munro. Notably, Munro smacked 23 sixes playing for Auckland against Central Districts in 2015. Afghanistan's Shafiqullah Shinwari sits on the third spot in the list with 22 maximums to his name playing for Kabul Region against Boost.

On the other hand, the record for most sixes registered by an Indian in a first-class innings is with Ishan Kishan and Shakti Singh who both have 14 maximums to his name. Having already broken several records on Day 1, there was more glory waiting for Agarwal as he had a chance to break the record for the highest first-class score by an Indian held by Bhausaheb Nimbalkar who scored an unbeaten 443* for Maharashtra way back in 1948.

Hyderabad won the match by an innings and 187 runs

However, he was unfortunately dismissed on 366 (181) smashing 34 fours and 26 sixes in his innings. As a result, he registered the joint fourth highest first-class score by an Indian along with MV Sridhar. Following his dismissal, Hyderabad declared their innings on 615/4 leading by 443 runs.

In the second innings, Arunachal Pradesh were bundled out for 256 with Divyanshu Yadav top scoring with 91 (92). Tanay Thyagarajan (3/64) and Palakodeti Sairam (3/24) picked up three wickets each for Hyderabad to set up a win by an innings and 187 runs for Hyderabad.

Following his record-breaking innings, Agarwal revealed that he was not eyeing any record and went with the flow of the innings.

"The world record just happened. Nothing was planned. There were no plans that I would do this and that. It just happened. No, I am not because I don't know how much longer we will be batting on Saturday. As long as I bat tomorrow, I will try to play like I started the innings today. If it happens, it happens. I don't have in mind that I have to achieve this or that,” Agarwal was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
