Australia's batting star Steve Smith was top of his game in the recently concluded Test series against the Windies. Unfortunately, the same could not be said about his iconic baggy green cap. Smith posed with his tattered baggy green during Australia's victory in the Adelaide Test, causing an uproar on social media. However, the prolific cricketer has blamed the rats in Galle for the poor condition of his cap and vowed to get it fixed soon.
Steve Smith has been a run-scoring machine for the Aussies in the longest format of the game, with his record in red-ball cricket drawing comparisons with the legendary Don Bradman. However, the batting ace came under scrutiny after he was pictured with a worn-out baggy green cap in Adelaide.
The fabric had worn off the brim, making for ugly viewing. Fans went hard on the Aussie cricketer for scorning the iconic cap, which is a treasured garment of the national team. Following the backlash, the 33-year-old revealed that the cap was disintegrated by rats on Australia's latest tour of Sri Lanka.
"I left it overnight in the change room in Galle like I do everywhere and turned up the next day and rats had got to it I think. I’m going to try and get it fixed this week, it’s falling apart," Smith told The Australian.
Smith is currently ranked no.2 in the ICC player rankings for Tests, behind his compatriot Marnus Labuschagne, and is gearing up to face a daunting challenge in the upcoming Test series against the Proteas. The influential batter is looking forward to the series and feels in a good space after slightly tweaking his batting technique.
"Some of the bowlers I'm going to come up against I've come up against them previously. I'm really looking forward to the series like everyone else. I feel in a good place, I feel like I'm batting nicely. I'm looking forward to it," he added.
