The landmark Women's Premier League (WPL) auction got off to a remarkable start after India's Smriti Mandhana triggered an intense bidding war between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. The Indian opener, who was the first player to go under the hammer at the marquee event, was bagged by RCB for a whopping INR 3.4 crore.
Smriti Mandhana, who was expected to garner a big sum of money at the auction, lived up to the billing, attracting the attention of two of the most renowned cricket franchises in the world, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, it was the Bangalore-based franchise that triumphed in the bidding war, making Mandhana the most expensive player in the auction.
Following the prized scalp of the Indian opener, RCB secured the services of veteran New Zealand cricketer Sophie Devine for her base price of INR 50 lakh, an absolute bargain in the context of things. Mike Hesson's camp made another headline signing as they roped in Australian legend Ellyse Perry for INR 1.7 crore in the first round of auction.
Even after the statement signings of Mandhana, Devine and Perry, the Royal Challengers Bangalore weren't done, as they splashed the cash for ICC's Emerging Player of 2022, Renuka Singh. The young pacer was bagged for a hefty sum of INR 1.5 crore. RCB added another star to their already impressive arsenal when they roped in young U19 batting superstar Richa Ghosh to their squad.
Richa, who was at the heart of the U19 team's successful T20 World Cup campaign last month, played a rollicking innings against Pakistan on Sunday, February 12, to guide her side to a thrilling victory. She was bagged for a handsome fee of INR 1.9 crore. Still just 19 years of age, the explosive middle-order batter has made quite a reputation in white-ball cricket and will be one of the players to watch out for in the tournament.
The accelerated auction round saw the franchise make a string of signings, with Australian all-rounder Eric Burns being another bargain at a base price of INR 30 lakh. England skipper Heather Knight, who went unsold in the initial round, to the surprise of many, also joined the RCB camp for her base price of INR 40 lakh.
Dane van Niekerk will bring the South African flavor to the franchise after she was also signed for her base price. The ace all-rounder, who was controversially left out from South Africa's T20 World Cup squad, will prove to be an invaluable addition to the team due to her all-round capabilities.
