Real task now is to not only win Champions Trophy but also beat India in Dubai: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif
“We have a very good side and they have done well in recent times," Shehbaz Sharif said.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set high expectations for the national men's team, asking them to not only win the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy but also to secure a victory against arch-rivals India in Dubai on February 23. Sharif mentioned the importance of Pakistan hosting the prestigious tournament after nearly three decades and the need for the team to step up on the occasion.
Pakistan and India share one of the most fierce rivalries in the game, with matches between the two nations carrying immense importance over the sport. Historically, India have dominated ICC events, but Pakistan have had their share of victories, including their famous win over India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final and their T20 World Cup victory in Dubai in 2021.
However, due to political tensions, India have refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy, leading to their matches, including the much-anticipated Pakistan clash, being scheduled in Dubai instead.
“We have a very good side and they have done well in recent times but the real task now is to not only win the Champions Trophy but also defeat our arch-rival, India in the upcoming match in Dubai. The entire nation stands behind them,” Sharif said at the inauguration ceremony of the renovated and upgraded Gaddafi stadium.

Sharif also spoke about hosting the Champions Trophy after 29 years and the remarkable modification of the stadium. The event saw several dignitaries, PCB representatives, and cricket personalities in attendance, celebrating the successful renovation of Pakistan’s cricket venue in just 117 days. The inauguration ceremony featured performances from popular artists like Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig, along with a fireworks display.
“It is a big occasion for Pakistan that we are hosting a big ICC event after nearly 29 years. I have full confidence that our team will continue to make the nation proud in the upcoming Champions Trophy,” he added.
In preparation for the Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has upgraded stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, ensuring world-class facilities for the event. The Gaddafi Stadium, with a capacity of 35,000, now consists of modern amenities.
