Reports: Ashish Nehra's future as head coach of Gujarat Titans enveloped in ambiguity
The former India paceman was appointed as the head coach of the Gujarat Titans in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.
As the mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League approaches, the prospect of significant changes looms over not only the captains and pivotal players of various franchises but also the coaching staff. Among those facing uncertainty is Ashish Nehra, the current head coach of the Gujarat Titans.
It would be unsurprising if CVC Capital, the present proprietor of the three-year-old franchise, opts to overhaul their coaching staff in anticipation of the forthcoming mega auction later this year, according to reports from Cricbuzz.
IPL insiders indicate that the management of the 2022 season, with its administrative headquarters in the UK and additional officials based in Mumbai and Singapore, is contemplating a revamp of their coaching staff for the upcoming season. This potential redesign may result in the departure of key figures such as Vikram Solanki, serving as the Director of Cricket, Ashish Nehra, the head coach, and Gary Kirsten, who has been the mentor and batting coach during the team's inaugural three seasons.
Several factors appear to be influencing the proposed changes, despite the team’s success under the current leadership. GT secured the title in their inaugural year, 2022, and achieved a commendable second place in 2023, reflecting strong performance in their early seasons. However, one member of the trio, Kirsten, has already departed to join the Pakistan national team, which is likely a primary catalyst for the potential renovation of the South African’s position.
There are indications that the Udaipur-born ex-English cricketer may potentially retain his position amidst the anticipated reform, but the future of the head coach role remains more precarious. It is rumoured that Nehra may have caused some discontent among certain individuals over the past three seasons, with some players reportedly dissatisfied with his coaching methodology and other aspects. The former India pacer was a prominent figure in previous seasons, notably seen advising Mohit Sharma during the 2023 final from the boundary line. However, his presence was less conspicuous during the 2024 season, a shift that may not be purely coincidental.
