The Indian team will be up against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final and though the team is looking good with the senior and upcoming players in form there is a question mark among fans and experts if somebody else will be taking over the reins in ODI cricket.

The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently in the last phase of their career and there are already likely candidates who are most likely to lead the side after their departure. According to reports, the Indian team might be looking to appoint separate leaders in white-ball and red-ball cricket.

Right now, Rohit is still leading the ODI team while Suryakumar Yadav is currently the T20I skipper with Axar Patel as his deputy. A BCCI source has revealed that Jasprit Bumrah is the leading candidate for Test captaincy after Rohit and also mentioned the poor form of Surya in T20Is saying that the next few months will be crucial.

“Jasprit Bumrah is the leading candidate to become the Test captain, if he is fit. Suryakumar's recent performance with the bat has been bad. The next few months will be crucial for the Indian team," the BCCI source said as per a Dainik Jagran report.

The report further stated that Rohit might continue as a player in ODIs despite there being a change in leadership with the captaincy being passed on to either star all-rounder Hardik Pandya or young and upcoming top-order batter Shubman Gill. This will happen in case he is selected in the future.

Coming to the final of the Champion Trophy, though India are leading the head-to-head stats in 50-over cricket the BlackCaps have been dominant against them in the ICC knockout events. The only victory India have achieved against New Zealand in those matches is in the semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup which took place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
