Australia all-rounder Cameron Green may miss the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is slated to begin on November 22. The 25-year-old was expected to get fit by the first Test but later, it was reported that the cricketer might miss the opening game of the series and play the rest of the series as a batter only. As per the latest update, he is likely to undergo radical surgery in New Zealand, which rules him out of the entire India series.

He was even considered to be sent out to open in the India series, which would help the team management to bring Steve Smith back to number four. After David Warner’s retirement, Smith chose to open the innings but hasn’t made the most of the opportunity and for the same reason, he was expected to move down. However, now with Green injured, there remains doubt regarding Australia’s playing order.

“He has no chance of being ready for the first Test against India on November 22 in Perth and it is not sounding good for any time soon after that. He may not play this summer,” a report by renowned Australian journalist Peter Lalor stated about Green.

Selection conundrum for Australia for Green's potential replacement

If he ends up missing the entire series, the likes of Michael Neser and Scott Boland might feature in the playing XI as an extra pacer. However, the team management may also consider playing an extra batter, particularly either Cameron Bancroft or Marcus Harris. Both were in contention after Warner retired, but Smith’s moving to the top order ruined their chances.

With Smith expected to move back to number four, the opener spot is once again up for grabs and one of them can make their way to the team. Notably, the Sheffield Shield will be very important for Cricket Australia selectors to finalise their squad. Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja will be the other opener.
