Reports: Delhi Capitals approached Mumbai Indians for Rohit Sharma's trade ahead of IPL 2024

Ahead of the much-awaited IPL 2024 auction, there’s a lot happening among the ten franchises as the news of player trades, releases have been emerging every other day. However, the biggest update of the last few days has been the appointment of Hardik Pandya as the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) who’s replaced Rohit Sharma. Notably, Pandya made a return to MI after two years through a player trade with Gujarat Titans.

A few weeks after returning to his old franchise, he has replaced Sharma who led Mumbai to a record five IPL titles in his 11-year-long captaincy tenure. Meanwhile, a new report emerging in the cricketing fraternity states that Delhi Capitals approached MI to trade Rohit Sharma ahead of IPL 2024.

According to Sports Today, DC reportedly wanted a veteran player to captain their side in the upcoming season as their regular skipper Rishabh Pant will be playing as an Impact Player in the next edition. However, MI denied the offer as they rarely leave their players. They had to let go of all-rounder Cameron Green, who was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore in an all-cash deal of INR 17.50 crore, to have enough purse amount to bring Pandya back. 

Rohit Sharma is joint most successful captain in IPL

Notably, Sharma is the joint-most successful captain in the history of the IPL having led Mumbai to five IPL titles after taking over the leadership duties in 2013. He also ranks on the fourth spot in the list of leading run scorers in the tournament’s history with 6211 runs to his name from 238 innings at an average of 29.57 and a strike rate of 130.04.

The opening batter has scored one hundred and 42 fifties in his IPL career and even has the second-most number of sixes in the tournament’s history (257). However, Sharma has been having a below-par show with the bat in the last few seasons of the tournament and will be eager to turn things around in the upcoming season having gotten the burden of captaincy off his shoulders.
