Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is likely to return to professional cricket as early as in a couple of weeks' time as he is expected to target Australia's three-match ODI series against India in March to make his international comeback.

The 34-year-old suffered a strange leg injury, and ended up fracturing his left fibula, during a friend’s birthday party in November 2022, which ruled him out of the ongoing Big Bash League and sidelined him for nearly three months. Had Maxwell been fit enough to play, the national selectors might have considered him for selection for the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy but unfortunately, that couldn't turn out to be the case.

Maxwell has represented the Aussies in seven Tests. He was also included in the Australian Test squad for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy in Sri Lanka in 2022, but he couldn’t find a place in the playing XI. Maxwell also seems frustrated that he is not fit enough to take the field and his frustration was vivid during his recent interaction with Fox Cricket.

“Probably will nag at me for the rest of my life. It’s nice getting the opportunity to watch your teammates play, especially over there. I think they’ve got the squad that’s probably as good as I’ve seen go over to India since I’ve been watching Tests over there, anyway,” Maxwell told Fox Cricket.

“With the way Cameron Green showed his wares in Sri Lanka last year, they were some brilliant signs of guys adapting their gameplan to the conditions, and being able to implement it straight away,” he further added.

The star all-rounder might feature for Victoria in a Sheffield Shield fixture against Queensland which is scheduled to be played on February 9 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as per The Age. It is understood that Maxwell's return to Australia's ODI set-up soon is extremely crucial for the Kangaroos as he is going to be one of their key players heading into the ODI World Cup in India later this year.
