Pakistan star all-rounder Imad Wasim reversed his retirement, making himself available for the T20I ahead of the much-awaited ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The marquee event is scheduled to be played in the United States of America and the West Indies, starting on June 2.

Wasim will take part first in the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand following his return. Before he decided to take a reverse call, the 35-year-old engaged in discussions with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Salman Naseer and Chief Selector Wahab Riaz. He reportedly informed the authorities that the condition of his return will be selection assurance in Pakistan's T20I squad until the next World Cup, which  Wahab agreed to.

Wasim called time on his international career in November 2023. It is understood that his decision came after considering the difficulties associated with acquiring NOCs (No Objection Certificates) to take part in franchise leagues. He previously spoke to Salman Naseer, PCB's Chief Operating Officer, regarding the importance of honoring different contractual duties beyond international commitments. He had also urged PCB's assistance in facilitating his engagement in franchise leagues while also mentioning that he would be available whenever the team required.

In addition, he informed that he has no interest in securing a central contract despite his focus on playing for Pakistan and aiming for a World Cup victory. He had said that he could play for Pakistan without a formal contract. Despite Wasim's standpoint on the central contract being approved by PCB officials, PCB  chairman Mohsin Naqvi has yet to make a decision on the same.  Notably, players will be rewarded at a lower tier if they play for the country without a central contract.
