Out-of-favour England opener Jason Roy is likely to join Northern Superchargers for the upcoming edition of The Hundred. The 33-year-old was released by defending champions Oval Invincibles after recording a poor season with the bat. He averaged 17.11 in 2023, following which, Oval decided to release the player.

Roy entered the draft earlier in the year with a base price of £100,000 but went unsold. His demand for a high salary wasn’t answered by any of the eight franchises given his poor form last summer. However, things developed in recent times between Roy and Superchargers as the franchise has offered to sign the opener.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Roy will replace Brydon Carse in the squad. The 28-year-old was retained by Superchargers on a £60,000 contract but his recent betting ban complicated things. Carse was suspended from all forms of cricket for three months, which opened the doors for Roy to make his return.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently confirmed that Roy and Mark Wood had withdrawn from the Wildcard draft, which took place on Monday, June 24. Since then, it has been noted that Roy’s move to Superchargers is only a matter of time and both parties are negotiating the salary, which is allowed for replacement players.

However, Roy will be missing the Superchargers’ opening game against Trent Rockets on July 26. He will be playing for Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) and is due to travel to the United States of America for the new season. The tournament will end on July 28 and following which, Roy will be joining the Superchargers squad.

Meanwhile, Roy withdrew from IPL 2024 to prioritise time with family. He recently featured for Surrey in the T20 Blast in which he scored 122 runs in five matches at an average of 24.40. In his last game against Gloucestershire, Roy hit 55 runs off 40 deliveries.
