If Aaron Finch gets hurt or continues to score poorly, Matthew Wade, an uncontracted wicketkeeper and middle-order batter will serve as Australia's alternative skipper for the home World Cup which begins in October 2022. Wade performed brilliantly in the recently concluded series against India, which Australia lost by 2-1.

Wade was initially chosen to captain Australia when Finch missed a Twenty20 match against India at the SCG in late 2020. Since then, Wade's irrational behavior and history of agitation against rival teams have faded in comparison to his worth as an experienced state captain and one of the team's most prominent factors.

His development may also serve as a valuable indicator that David Warner, another cricketer who was occasionally forced into "attack dog" positions for the Australian men's squad in the years preceding up to the 2018 World Cup, should not be ruled out of consideration.

As per a report by The Sydney Morning Herals, at their next meeting in October, Cricket Australia's directors will discuss potential white-ball captaincy contenders to take Finch's post after the World Cup.

Matthew Wade's significant developments

Wade had been chosen at least once for his "mongrel" and verbal attacks from behind the wickets before the 2018 cultural review of Australian cricket, taking Peter Nevill's place in the Test team in November 2016. Greg Chappell, the then-selector, was horrified by the action.

Wade was replaced by Tim Paine before the 2017–18 Ashes after playing the following 10 Tests. Wade gained a Test recall in 2019 as a specialty batter before losing his position once more in 2020–21. But in terms of the T20, he has continued to be a significant player.

Wade will only be given an incremental contract after participating in 12 T20 international matches after being rejected for a Cricket Australia agreement earlier this year. This contract is only worth roughly $350,000. The Australians have 13 games planned, not counting the recent India series and the World Cup semifinals and championship.

Wade led the Twenty20 team in a series that the hosts won 4-1 on a notoriously challenging Dhaka pitch, completing his development as a major team leader with a properly specified role at seventh in the batting order in the modest conditions of last year's tour to Bangladesh.

More significant than those outcomes, though, was the team's decision to name Wade as Finch's interim captain. The team also changed its game plan to include seven specialist hitters and four bowlers, eventually abandoning the five-bowler approach favored by former coach Justin Langer. It would be intriguing to see what strategies the reigning World Champions have in place with the next edition of the World Cup approaching.
