Delhi's cricket team is about to face another setback as prominent batters Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey intend to switch domestic teams. The duo, considered among Delhi's most promising talents, have formally requested the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to facilitate their transfers ahead of the upcoming domestic season.
Rana and Shorey's discontent arises from the recent struggles that Delhi's domestic cricket has experienced. The team's poor performance in the Elite B Group of the Ranji Trophy during the 2022-23 season has highlighted underlying issues, including controversies surrounding captaincy changes, selection differences, and overall team management.
During the last season, Nitish Rana was frequently in and out of the playing XI. His frustration came to a head when he made himself unavailable for Delhi's match against Hyderabad.
“Nitish Rana was exploring options after the last season ended. He wasn’t happy with how he was dropped midway through last season and was on the lookout. He returned for the game against Mumbai and then made himself unavailable for the game against Hyderabad," a close source revealed, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Dhruv Shorey, known for his association with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, is also considering his alternatives. His dissatisfaction primarily revolves around the limited opportunities he received in white-ball cricket for Delhi. Despite showcasing his capabilities with a century in the Duleep Trophy, Shorey's prospects in shorter formats have been limited, affecting his desire to continue with the team.
Meanwhile, Rana and Shorey have been selected for Delhi's squad in the upcoming Buchi Babu tournament, hosted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). This tournament will feature a red-ball format and bring together 12 teams to provide players with meaningful match practice.
The duo's request for NOCs on the eve of the team's departure for Tamil Nadu raises concerns about the internal issues within the Delhi squad. As seasoned players and potential leaders, Rana and Shorey's potential departure could leave a notable void in the team's structure.
