Indian cricket in considerable disruption - both on and off the field. This is particularly true when it comes to the Test side. Right from the series against New Zealand at home, results have not gone India's way. This has been accompanied by widespread changes within the team, the latest of which is the exclusion of captain Rohit Sharma himself.

Rohit has been going through a lean patch, particularly in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Owing to that, he was dropped midway through the series with Jasprit Bumrah taking the charge in the fifth and final Test in Sydney.

As per an Indian Express report, Rohit is no longer a part of India's red-ball plans and the same has been communicated to him by the selectors as the team prepares for a new WTC cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup. As things stand, it remains highly unlikely that Rohit will be considered for the World Test Championship final in June if India qualify.

The decision against Rohit playing at the Sydney Cricket Ground seems to have been a call taken by head coach Gautam Gambhir in conjunction with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Meanewhile, it is also reported that the selectors will have a discussion with Virat Kohli on the way forward as the team is primed to enter one of the biggest transitions.

As far as the 2025 Champions Trophy is concerned, a concrete decision will be taken in the coming days after the team returns to India following the conclusion of the series Down Under. It has emerged that Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be handed the reins if Rohit falls out of favour in ODIs. The next few weeks will understandably be crucial for Indian cricket.
