In the build-up to the inaugural ODI match against South Africa in Johannesburg, KL Rahul expressed his confidence in Rinku Singh, hinting at the left-hander's imminent ODI debut in the forthcoming three-match series. Acknowledging Rinku’s impressive batting display, he praised the youngster, citing his refreshing style at the crease. Rinku, who made a mark during his T20I debut at the Asian Games 2023, notably notched his maiden T20I fifty during the recent showdown against South Africa.
Rahul applauded the Uttar Pradesh batter's proficiency in the role of a finisher, citing his instrumental role in stabilizing the team's innings during a precarious phase in the 2nd T20I against South Africa in Gqeberha. Emphasizing Rinku’s remarkable maturity, the India skipper revealed his discussion with the promising batter over his inclusion while also commending his incredible batting prowess.
"He (Rinku Singh) has shown what a really good player he is. Watching him in the IPL, we all knew that he's very skilled. But what's been really good is the temperament he has shown in the T20I series and the game awareness and calmness that he has shown under pressure. That has been very refreshing for me to see on television. I just spoke to him about that as well. He has performed really well across formats in first-class cricket. So, yes, he will get his opportunity even in the ODI series," Rahul said in the pre-match press conference as quoted by IndiaToday.
Sanju Samson to get slotted in middle-order
Additionally, Rahul confirmed Sanju Samson's placement in the middle order, expected to occupy either the 5th or 6th slot during the forthcoming ODI series against South Africa. Samson's journey had seen him in contention for the ODI World Cup squad, notably being part of the Asia Cup team as a backup for an injured KL Rahul.
India's ODI squad has undergone a youthful transition due to the absence of key senior players, namely Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah. These stalwarts are set to join the team ahead of the Test series. The ODI series follows India's T20I performance, culminating in a 1-1 draw.
