Robin Uthappa blames Virat Kohli for cutting short Yuvraj Singh's stint in international cricket
"Then for such a player, when you become captain, you say his lung capacity has diminished and you have been with him when you have seen him struggle," Uthappa said.
Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa recently was part of an interview where he talked about a plethora of topics. One of the more discussed topics was the captaincy stint of ace India batter Virat Kohli. Uthappa talked about how Kohli was indirectly responsible for cutting short Yuvraj Singh’s international career after he had beat cancer.
The reason for the same being that the former all-rounder was unable to maintain the fitness standards that Kohli required the rest of his team to maintain. Widely revered as one of the best white ball cricketers of his time, Yuvraj Singh was influential in India’s 2007 and 2011 World Cup wins, however, he was diagnosed with cancer after the tournament.
Yuvraj did make a remarkable recovery and fought his way back into the Indian team. However, the Chandigarh-born chose to retire soon after subpar performances after his comeback.
"Then for such a player, when you become captain, you say his lung capacity has diminished, and you have been with him when you have seen him struggle. Nobody has told me this, I observe things,” Uthappa said during an interview on 'Lallantop'.
"You have seen him struggle, then when you are captain, yes you have to maintain a level of standard, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Here is a man who deserves to be an exception because he has not just beaten and won you tournaments, but he has beaten cancer,” he added.
When Yuvi requested for that two-point deduction, he didn't get it: Uthappa
Furthermore, Uthappa talked about how Yuvraj Singh asked for a point deduction in the fitness test but was denied any type of leniency by the management.
"So the two points that Yuvi had requested for the fitness test, they didn't give him that. And after that, Yuvi told, 'Okay, I'll do it' because he was out of the team, and wasn't being considered. So after that, he passed the fitness test and then made his way into the team. But after a lean tournament, he was completely removed, and never considered again," he revealed.
