Roger Binny officially replaces Sourav Ganguly as BCCI President

Former India cricketer Roger Binny has been appointed as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He is the 36^th president of the BCCI and will succeed Sourav Ganguly in the role. The official announcement was made on Tuesday, October 18, after the conclusion of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting.

Notably, the 67-year-old Roger Binny was the only contender for the presidential role. The election of the upcoming group of officeholders was merely a formality since they will all be elected without opposition. Binny, who most recently served as the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, will now vacate his post within the state organization.

Binny was a part of India’s historic 1983 world cup winning squad and played a crucial role in leading India to a win. He recorded the most wickets in that year's premier event (18) in just eight games. When Sandeep Patil held the chairman’s position, Binny had then served as a member of the senior selection committee.

According to the updated rules established by the Supreme Court, Ganguly, who assumed the job of BCCI president in 2019, was qualified for an extension. He apparently didn't receive support from other members, though. It is believed that after his discussions with the stakeholders, he learned that a second term is still improbable.

Binny achieves a unique feat

There was a two-day period (October 11–12) set aside for submitting nomination applications in person. October 14 was officially the last date for withdrawing names, and the candidates were set to be announced a day later. On October 15, the candidates for the election were announced, and the list included just one name. Thus, on October 18, there was a simple formality in the election and declarations and Binny was named the President.

The 91st annual general meeting of the board was attended by the secretary of the BCCI, Jay Shah, the vice-president, Rajeev Shukla, the treasurer, Arun Dhumal, and the outgoing president, Sourav Ganguly. Binny's appointment makes him the first-ever former World Cup winner to serve as BCCI president.
