After Indian batters disastrous outing in the New Zealand series at home and Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, several former cricketers critiqued that the dip in form is because of lack of playing in domestic cricket. Subsequently, the BCCI also released new guidelines where they pressed on the need to play domestic cricket to solidify the spot in the national team.
Rohit Sharma, who is going through a rough phase with the bat, had previously joined the Mumbai team ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. He was seen practicing with the home team in the nets and his inclusion in their upcoming games was still a speculation. But, as Rohit attended the press conference to unveil India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad, he also revealed that he will be playing upcoming Ranji game against Jammu and Kashmir.

“I will (play),” Rohit said in the press conference.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the national selection committee, added: “Sometimes, to be fair to a lot of the players, it’s difficult if you are playing all three formats. You don’t get as much time, but there’s no doubt that they should play domestic cricket. You will probably find most of the guys playing this round of Ranji Trophy.”
“It’s one of the things that the BCCI has obviously put forward. But as selectors, we expect people when they’re available to play because that can only strengthen our domestic structure. Not just for their form or their fitness and playing cricket, but it can only strengthen our domestic structure,” Agarkar concluded.
