India skipper Rohit Sharma was dropped from the playing XI for the Sydney Test between Australia and India for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). However, what came as an even bigger surprise to many was that Rohit's name was not even on the 16-man team sheet for the Sydney clash.

It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma has been in poor form as of late, scoring just 31 runs in five innings in the BGT 2024-25; the skipper was benched for the final Test of the series. Many expected Rohit to miss out on the fifth test, but his name not even on the team sheet has sparked speculations about whether Rohit would be the second player to retire in the series.

It is worth noting that Rohit missed out on the first Test of the series due to the birth of his second child. Ever since he came back in the second Test, Rohit has been unable to perform for India, which saw him being rested for the fifth Test.

That is unfortunately professional sports: Mark Taylor

Former Australia cricketer Mark Taylor recently came forward and lambasted India for using the phrase of resting Rohit Sharma for the fifth Test. Taylor’s comments came through after stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah announced that Rohit had opted to rest himself from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"To be honest, that's, what do I call that. That's once again, sidestepping the point. The bottom line is the captain of a country does not opt out for the final Test match, the final deciding Test match of a series. He has been dropped and I don't know why they just don't say he's been dropped. That doesn't mean he's dropped forever, it means he's missing this match because he is out of form. That is unfortunately professional sports," Taylor told Triple M Cricket.
