Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan has not been discussed yet: BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia
The tentative date for the captains event ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 is around February 16 or 17, and it will be held in Karachi.
There is still no clarity regarding Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan to attend the Champions Trophy 2025 captains event in Karachi next month. The tentative date is around February 16 or 17. This event is generally organised in the host country. While the matches in the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan and the UAE, the former is the official host of the eight-team tournament.
According to the newly-appointed BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Devjit Saikia, there has been no official communication regarding the captains event from the ICC.
"It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet," Saikia told ESPNcricinfo.
It could not be confirmed whether the BCCI would need approval from the Indian government before they can allow Rohit to travel to Pakistan.
India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series in 2012-13. They have faced each other in ICC events and in the Asia Cup since then. India have not travelled to Pakistan in this period. However, the Men in Green have visited their neighbouring country during events like the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Pakistan were initially set to host the Champions Trophy exclusively. However, after India declined travelling to Pakistan, the tournament was shifted to a hybrid model. The Men in Blue will play their matches in Dubai.
Saikia, meanwhile, has clarified that India will adhere to the dress code set by the ICC for the global event, responding to media speculation that the BCCI had denied using the host country's name on their jersey. For the unversed, player jerseys during ICC events usually include the logo of the competition, with the name of the tournament, host country and year under it.
"BCCI will follow every uniform-related ICC rule during Champions Trophy. Whatever the other teams will do regarding the logo and dress code, we are going to follow in true letter and spirit," Saikia said.
India and Pakistan are once again placed in the same group. They have New Zealand and Bangladesh for company. The arch-rivals will face each other on February 23 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
