Rajasthan Royals look keen on clinching their second IPL title in 2024.
The inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals came in with all guns blazing in the auction for the 17th edition of the tournament. The coveted mini-auction was held for the first time in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19, the auction of the marquee competition included 333 players with a maximum of 77 slots for the ten franchises in total.
Among the 333 players available, 214 were Indian players, with the remaining 119 being overseas cricketers. The royals had a forgettable season in 2023, as they failed to make it to the knockout stages after reaching the summit clash in 2022. Finishing in fifth place, the Royals had 14 points to their name in just as many matches as they barely missed out on a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament. However, with their acquisitions in the auction, the team will be hopeful for an improved performance in the upcoming season.
The auction began with the Royals securing the services of West Indies’ batter Rovman Powell for a whopping INR 7.4 crore. The franchise came into the event with a purse of INR 14.5 crore. Furthermore, they had eight slots available, with three of them being for overseas players before the auction. They also roped in the likes of Shubham Dubey, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore.
Rajasthan Royals aim to go big in search of second title
The fortunes have not always favoured Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Having won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008, the franchise is still in search of its second title.
The side came within touching distance in 2022, when they lost the summit clash to Gujarat Titans. However, under Sanju Samson’s leadership and the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Jos Buttler, Ravichandran Ashwin, and many more stars in their side, it will be interesting to see how the side fares in the IPL 2024.
