Indian Premier League 2023 witnessed its best encounter of this season on April 9 when Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off a thrilling last-over win over reigning champions Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Rinku Singh made headlines as he achieved a near-impossible feat by smashing five consecutive sixes off Gujarat's Yash Dayal when Kolkata needed 28 runs to win in the last five balls.
Rinku scored a sensational match-winning knock of 48* off 21 while Dayal, who conceded 69 runs without any wicket, needed some morale-backing to come back stronger. Former Indian cricketer Rohan Gavaskar, who was live on commentary during the match, was critical of the left-arm pacer as he suggested that Rinku's heroics were due to the bowler's "rubbish" spell.
"This is why I say it's a bowler's game. He has bowled absolute rubbish over there, but we've been talking about Rinku Singh and how good he has been batting. Yesterday we were saying that if a batter goes at about a run-a-ball or at a strike-rate of 120, you are criticising him. A bowler goes for 31 and you say it's Rinku Singh - he takes the plaudits. And that is why I keep saying this is a bowler's game," Rohan Gavaskar said.
However, Rohan's comments on Rinku and Dayal took aback cricket fans, as they expressed their disappointment towards the commentator.
Meanwhile, the cricket fraternity has thrown its support behind Dayal. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan tweeted and advised the youngster to forget the game and turn things around quickly. Kolkata Knight Riders also backed the player with a motivational Instagram post after winning the game.
