'Runs will flow from the bat very well soon' - Robin Uthappa shares take on Suryakumar Yadav's form slump
Since Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as India's T20I captain last year, the Men in Blue have not lost a series in the shortest format. However, the 34-year-old hasn't been in great form with the bat.
Since Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as India's full-time T20I captain last year, the Men in Blue have not lost a series in the shortest format. However, the 34-year-old hasn't been in great form with the bat during this period.
In the 2024-25 season, the Mumbai batter has only scored 166 runs from 11 innings in T20I cricket. In the recently-concluded five-match series against England, Suryakumar managed just 28 runs from five innings. While Robin Uthappa is content with his former Kolkata Knight Riders teammate's performance as a captain, he feels that there is a scope for improvement with the bat. However, the former wicketkeeper-batter asserted that it is only a matter of time before Suryakumar gets back among the runs.
“I want to touch on Suryakumar Yadav’s form. Since he has become T20I captain, the leadership level is on par, but his performance hasn’t blossomed. And it’s justified because of the way he came into international cricket and performed consistently. I think it’s not surprising that his form has dipped, but I don’t think it will last [long]. In my opinion, he’ll be back among the runs," Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
The cricketer-turned-commentator backed the Mumbai batter to play with a positive intent and lead the team from the front to churn the desirable results, both for the team and himself.
“And anyways, as a leader, you want to lead from the front and as far as when you speak about playing ultra-aggressive cricket. As a leader, you want to lead from the front and I think he is ticking that box. He will return to form and runs will flow from the bat very well soon," Uthappa added.
He'll use the IPL to return to form: Uthappa
Uthappa is hopeful that ace batter will use the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to overcome his form slump. The latter was retained by the Mumbai Indians for INR 16.35 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
“One more thing, he will use the IPL to come back into form, come back into runs, and become the swashbuckling dangerous player by the end of the IPL. We’ll see Suryakumar Yadav of the old," Uthappa stated.
The 18th edition of the IPL will commence on March 21. Kolkata will host the opening ceremony and the final at the Eden Gardens with KKR entering to defend the title.
