SA20 2025: Paarl Royals sign BBL breakout star Mitchell Owen as Joe Root's replacement

Paarl Royals have recruited Australian opener Mitchell Owen as Joe Root's replacemenfor the remainder of SA20 2025. Root played eight matches for the David Miller-led side in his debut season, scoring 279 runs at an average of 55.80 and a strike rate of 140.20 in eight games. He will now join the England squad ahead of the three-match ODI series against India.

While Owen has big shoes to fill, he will be entering the Royals dressing room with confidence after his remarkable exploits in the recently-concluded Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25. The 23-year-old became a household name after helping Hobart Hurricanes win the BBL title for the first time. Owen finished as the highest run-scorer, amassing 452 runs from 11 matches at an average of 45.20 and a strike rate of 203.60. On expected lines, Owen's heroics helped him grab the eyeballs of franchises around the world. The Royals might want to make use of his magnificent form as they look to win a maiden SA20 title.

The Royals are currently placed at the top of the points table, with seven wins and two losses from nine games. They have already qualified for the playoffs. Bjorn Fortuin is leading the team in the absence of David Miller, who injured himself while fielding in the game against Durban Super Giants on January 27.

The Royals will return to action on Saturday, February 1, as they lock horns with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George's Park, Gqeberha.
