Young Australian opener Sam Konstas recently shared his thoughts on missing out on the playing XI in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. The 19-year-old, who impressed on his international debut against India, was named in Australia’s squad for the Sri Lanka series but was released mid-tour without playing a game. Instead, the team management promoted Travis Head to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja.

Konstas made a name for himself during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he smashed a quick-fire 60-run knock in his debut Test. His batting style and approach led to his selection for the Sri Lanka series. However, despite his brilliant start, Konstas had to warm the bench as the Australian team opted for a more experienced lineup in the subcontinent.

The right-hand batter spoke about his omission from the playing XI, revealing the opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the squad. Despite being disappointed about not getting a game, he expressed that playing alongside cricketers like Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Head was a solid experience.

“I felt like I was very privileged to be in the squad. And obviously learning from the best players like Steve Smith, Travis Head and Usman Khawaja and how their methods are different in those conditions. I learnt quite a bit. I understood the reasons why. For me, it is just a great learning curve and if I do get another opportunity with the Test team I will grab it with both hands. I understand why Travis Head opened the batting because he is a legend of the game and he has been dominating,” Konstas told CODE Sports.

Now back in Australia, Konstas is set to feature for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, where he will look to continue his fine form and push for another call-up to the national team.  In his debut series against India, it was not just about his performances with the bat but also his involvement in on-field moments. Konstas had a shoulder bump incident with Virat Kohli and later exchanged words with Jasprit Bumrah in the final Test.
