Sam Konstas under trouble for taking selfie with fans during MCG Test, may face financial penalty

Debutant batter Sam Konstas shone on his maiden outing during the highly-anticipated Boxing Day Test against India, being played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. In his first-ever showing at the international arena, Konstas hit a magnificent 60 runs off just 65 balls against a quality Indian attack, having the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. 

The right-hand batter was dismissed lbw (Leg Before Wicket) off orthodox spinner Ravindra Jadeja's bowling during the 20th over of the innings. The player then returned to the dressing room, and soon appeared having a chat with the official broadcasters. Furthermore, the teenager was spotted clicking some pictures with the fans at the 'G', and the cricketer may face trouble for this act.

According to ICC's playing conditions and rules, any player or a match official cannot leave the designated Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) unless he or she has obtained due permission from the concerned authority(s).

What does the ICC say on the matter?

According to ICC Anti-Corruption Minimum Standards for Players and Match Officials Areas (PMOA), "Express permission is required to leave the PMOA during the match from the Anti-Corruption Manager (ACM); or, where the ACM is unavailable, the relevant team manager or Match Referee (in the case of a Match Official) who must notify the ACM at the earliest opportunity."

Moreover, the usage of any mobile devices or devices connected to internet are also prohibited to be used or even possessed by any player or a match official during an active match.

"Communication devices are prohibited within the PMOA, barring specific exceptions. Without exception, no player shall be in possession of, or use a communication device (such as a mobile phone or a device which is connected to the internet, while in the PMΟΑ)," the ICC standard further reads.

"Failure to comply with PMOA regulations may result in financial penalties," the rule concludes on the matter.

Since the 19-year-old Konstas supposedly broke all the protocols aforementioned, he is likely to be questioned on the matter, and if found guilty, may face monetary sanction.
