Ahead of the three-match ODI and T20I series against South Africa, West Indies have appointed former leg-spinner Samuel Badree as their new assistant coach. Badree will serve only in the white-ball series against South Africa and following which Cricket West Indies is likely to appoint someone for the full-time role.
Meanwhile, the 41-year-old has previously worked with West Indies as their spin-bowling consultant and has experience of working with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In his latest role, he expects a tough challenge from the Proteas but seeks to acquit themselves well enough.
“I look forward to catching up with the players, some who I played with and most I already know, as we seek to acquit ourselves well on what is expected to be a challenging tour of South Africa,” Badree stated.
Notably, the former cricketer will work along with interim coach, Andre Coley, and Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, the newly appointed ODI and T20I captains, respectively. Meanwhile, Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket at CWI has stated that Badree will bring in a lot of experience and he can groom the slow bowlers into world-class players.
“Samuel brings plenty of international experience and a strong desire to assist our slow bowlers in becoming world-class. We believe this combination makes him ideally placed to add tremendous value to our support staff in South Africa, and specifically for our slow bowlers,” Adams mentioned.
South Africa defeated West Indies by 87 runs in the first Test
Notably, in the first Test match of the series, South Africa emerged victorious by defeating West Indies by 87 runs in Centurion. Courtesy of a solid batting performance by Aiden Markram in the first innings of the match, the Proteas were always in the driver’s seat but the tables turned when they bundled the Temba Bavuma-led side for 116 in the second innings.
However, despite a strong effort from Jermaine Blackwood (79 off 93) in the second innings of the match, the Caribbean team couldn't overcome the hurdle. Meanwhile, the next Test is set to begin on March 8, and will be played at Wanderers in Johannesburg.
