Sanjay Manjrekar tries to reconcile after Murali Vijay's epic tweet
Murali Vijay retired from international cricket on January 30.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has tried to make amends with another former India cricketer Murali Vijay, after his (Manjrekar's) massive faux pas on air during the ongoing first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 between India and Australia.
It all began when the commentators on air were discussing the conversion rate of Indian openers in home Test matches. The list of the openers with the best conversion rates at home was topped by none other than Murali Vijay as the 38-year-old had a conversion rate of 60 percent and was ahead of big names like Mohammad Azharuddin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
Good thing he is in that list: Sanjay Manjrekar lauds Murali Vijay
"He (Rohit) is No. 2 now with eight hundreds when it comes to conversion rates at home. It is a good thing that Murali Vijay is in that list because we tend to forget the contributions that people like him make. 12 Test hundreds – nine out of them at home and a brilliant conversion rate right at the top,” the 57-year-old said when Rohit Sharma scored his ninth Test century after lunch.
His comments on air came after Vijay responded to Manjrekar's initial comments after taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Manjrekar brought up the topic again and this time showered praise on Murali Vijay, saying that contributions from such players are often forgotten. Though not apologising directly, yet Manjrekar sounded graceful enough to admit his folly on air and gave Murali Vijay the due credit he deserved.
A visual display of the best conversion rates at home is what caused the entire saga. Here is the post :-
It is important to mention that this isn't the first time Manjrekar has gotten himself involved in such spats with cricketers. During the 2019 ODI World Cup, the cricketer-turned-commentator and Ravindra Jadeja had got involved in an argument after the commentator had termed the all-rounder 'A Bits and Pieces Player'.
Sanjay Manjrekar had slammed the idea of Virat Kohli and management to play with all-rounders and not specialists.
The statement by Manjrekar hadn't gone down well with Ravindra Jadeja as he took to his Twitter account and wrote, "Still I have played twice the number of matches you have played and I m still playing. Learn to respect ppl who have achieved. I have heard enough of your verbal diarrhoea."
