India is in a commanding position in the five-match Test series against England, leading 2-1 after impressive victories in Vizag and Rajkot. As the cricketing action now moves to Ranchi, the focus should have been solely on the game.

However, security concerns have taken the spotlight following a threat by US-based designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, aimed at disrupting the upcoming match between India and England.

Gurupatwant Singh Pannun has threatened the India and England teams, says Deputy Superintendent of Police

Pannun's declaration has prompted authorities to tighten the security measures in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. His warning, delivered through social media channels, not only targeted the cricket match but also appealed to the banned CPI (Maoist) group to disrupt the event.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Hatia, P K Mishra, addressing the press on Tuesday, revealed, "Gurupatwant Singh Pannun has threatened the India and England teams to cancel the match in Ranchi. He also urged the CPI (Maoist) to create disturbance to cancel the match."

“An FIR has been lodged against him at Dhurwa police station under the IT Act and an investigation has been initiated," he added as quoted by Deccan Herald.

The fourth Test, scheduled to commence at the JSCA International Stadium Complex on February 23, now carries an air of alarm. The England team's arrival in the city on Tuesday was met with heightened security protocols, indicative of the seriousness with which authorities are treating the threat posed by Pannun.

Pannun's notoriety in anti-terror circles dates back to 2019 when the National Investigation Agency (NIA) initiated proceedings against him. The confiscation of his assets in Punjab and Chandigarh in September 2023 marked a significant step in curtailing his influence.

However, his recent attempt to disrupt the India-England Test serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by individuals and groups embracing violence and extremism.
