Star Bangladesh all rounder Shakib al Hasan has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye, the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday, January 24. The 36-year-old reportedly complained of issues with his eye and consulted Ophthalmologists in both Bangladesh and overseas.
After multiple eye assessments it was confirmed that the cricketer had an issue with the retina in his left eye. However, the condition is unlikely to be a hindrance in Shakib’s cricketing career as he will continue to play in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League for Rangpur Riders who will take on the Khulna Tigers on January 26.

"Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye. It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now," Senior BCB Physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury said.
“Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib's case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach,” he added.
Notably, the opening fixture of Rangpur against Fortune Barishal also marked Shakib’s return to professional cricket after two months post his finger injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, the southpaw didn’t have a memorable outing with the bat scoring just 2 (3) but the left-arm spinner made amends with the ball registering figures of 2/16 in four overs.

Despite his good show with the ball, Rangpur ended up losing the game by five wickets. Following the end of the game, Rangpur’s skipper Nurul Hasan had also revealed about Shakib’s eyesight problem.
"He [Shakib] has been struggling with eyesight problem for some time now. I think he has been in touch with the doctors regularly. The doctors only could say in what stage the problem is now,” said Hasan after the game.
