After being named in the 15-member squad for Bangladesh's first Test against South Africa, Shakib Al Hasan is unlikely to take part in the series. Shakib had expressed desire to play his final Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
He seemed set to participate in the game before changing his mind due to security reasons. The preparation camp is scheduled to commence on October 18. An official from the BCB confirmed Shakib not arriving to the venue as of today.
"He (Shakib) is not coming today, that is for sure," stated the BCB official, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
For the unversed, Shakib was one amongst the 156 people named in the FIR for an alleged murder of a student during the political upheaval in the nation, which eventually led to the fall of the Awami League government that he represented in the parliament. The event occurred after Shakib was elected from his hometown, Magura, during the last election.
At the directive of the board, the selectors obliged with including Shakib in the mix. However, the dynamics seem to have tilted ever since a faction protested against Shakib in Mirpur of late.
I am advised by my close quarter that my security is a concern: Shakib
Shakib, who was set to travel to Bangladesh from New York, was informed about concerns regarding his safety while waiting for a connecting flight during a layover in Dubai. "I am advised by my close quarter that my security is a concern," shared Shakib.
A representative indicated that the board will adopt a "better safe than sorry" approach to safeguard Shakib.
"I think if any untoward scene happens during the Test due to Shakib's appearance in that case, that will give a wrong message to the world and that is probably the reason no one can guarantee his security as the whole stadium cannot be kept under watch," added the official.
