Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of legendary West Indies cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul, scored his first century in West Indies colours against Prime Minister's XI on Thursday (November 24). West Indies are set to play two Test matches against Australia starting on November 30 in Perth. The Caribbean side is currently engaged in a four-day tour match against Prime Minister's XI so as to prepare themselves for the main game.

The 26-year-old left-handed opener made his debut in the first tour match against Combined NSW and ACT XI, where he scored only four runs while opening the innings. But he displayed his potential in the second four-day tour game against the strong-looking Prime Minister's XI with some classic Test cricket batting performance.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul scores century but West Indies struggle against Prime Minister's XI:

Prime Minister's XI, under the captaincy of Josh Inglis, were bowled out for 322 while batting first at Canberra. Tagenarine opened the innings on day two alongside West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, and proved his worth with a big 94-run partnership for the first wicket.

After Brathwaite's wicket, Tagenarine took responsibility to keep the scorecard ticking and went on to score his first-ever century for West Indies. He scored 119 runs off 293 deliveries with the help of 13 fours and a six before getting caught out on Joel Paris' delivery in the 92nd over. Umpires called it a day after his dismissal, leaving West Indies struggling at 234/7 with Alzarri Joseph batting in the middle.

Tagenarine was part of West Indies' last Test series against Bangladesh in June this year but didn't get a chance to bat. But this time around, he is likely to open the innings alongside his captain in the first match against Australia scheduled on November 30. He enjoyed a good domestic season where he scored the second-highest runs, 439, from eight innings at an impressive average of 73.16.

West Indies, who are placed eighth in the current ICC Test rankings, won both matches against Bangladesh in their last Test series at home but face a tough challenge against top-ranked Australia.
