Team India gave the best Diwali gift to their fans through their fireworks during Match 45 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against the Netherlands on Sunday, November 12 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. After captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first, his decision was vindicated by all the batters as India posted a massive total of 410/4 in their allotted 50 overs.

KL Rahul played a breathtaking innings of 102 (64) smashing 11 fours and four sixes. The wicketkeeper batter also registered the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in ODI World Cup reaching the landmark in just 62 balls. During his innings, the crowd in Bengaluru were treated to some of the most sumptuous shots from Rahul’s bat as he put his wide array of strokes on display.

He played his trademark flick on the second ball of the 50th over to get to his century in style.

Apart from Rahul, Shreyas Iyer also scored a brilliant hundred as he remained unbeaten on 128* (94) smashing 10 fours and five sixes. Rahul and Iyer added 208 runs for the fourth wicket off 127 balls helping India cross the 400-run mark. Earlier in the innings, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got India off to a great start by adding 100 runs for the first wicket off 71 balls. Gill departed after scoring 51 (32) while Rohit scored 61 (54).

All of India's top five scored 50-plus

During his innings, Sharma also broke the record for most sixes in a calendar year in ODIs having smacked 60 maximums in the year so far. He left behind AB de Villiers who smashed 58 sixes in 2015. After the openers got dismissed, Virat Kohli walked in at number three and scored a brilliant half-century (51 off 56) before losing his stumps against Roelof van der Merwe.

Notably, all batters in the top five scored fifty-plus in the innings, which was the first such instance in the history of the ODI World Cup.
