Sri Lankan batter Kusal Mendis put on a show vs South Africa during Match 4 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Saturday, October 07 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The 28-year-old played a sensational knock of 76 (42) as he put his scintillating strokeplay on display. The Sri Lankan batter looked at his imperious best as he clobbered four fours and eight sixes in his innings sending the ball from one part of the ground to another.

Mendis played some majestic flicks and pulls to bring the crowd to the edge of their seats. He began his onslaught during the fifth over of the innings as he launched Lungi Ngidi for three sixes. One of his shots on the last ball of the over travelled way back into the stands at deep square leg as fans watched the carnage with their jaws dropped.

Mendis reached his half-century in style as he flicked Marco Jansen for a six on the on side and completed the landmark in just 25 balls. Notably, it was the third-fastest fifty by a Sri Lankan batter ODI World Cup. The right-handed batter also registered the second-most number of sixes in the first ten overs of an ODI (8) levelling with Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill. Gayle also sits on the top of the list with nine maximums in the first ten overs.

Mendis scored 158 (87) in the warm-up game vs Afghanistan

However, just when everything looked right for Sri Lankan Kagiso Rabada brought South Africa back into the game by dismissing Mendis in the 13th over making him edge straight to wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.

As a result, Mendis’ blitzkrieg came to an end as he left his side on 109/3 after 12.4 overs. Earlier in the second warm-up fixture vs Afghanistan at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, Mendis played another mind-boggling innings of 158 off 87 balls smashing 19 fours and nine sixes. The swashbuckling batter will be eager to continue his form as Sri Lanka moves ahead in the tournament
