India captain Rohit Sharma was seen at his imperious best during Match 9 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Rohit walked out to bat all guns blazing as he took on Afghanistan’s bowlers right from the word go. The opening batter went on to score a record-shattering hundred as he guided India to a massive eight-wicket win.
Rohit played a blistering knock of 131 off just 84 balls as he smacked 16 fours and five sixes in his innings. Among the many sumptuous shots hit by the Indian captain, one against Azmatullah Omarzai in the ninth over had the crowd gasping in admiration.
On the third ball of the over, Rohit dislodged a short delivery way back into the deep mid-wicket with his trademark pull. The Indian opener launched the ball soaring into the night sky leaving everyone fascinated. KL Rahul was also left awestruck by Rohit’s shot as he was spotted mouthing ‘Oh Wow’ in the dressing room.

During his knock, Rohit sent records for a toss with his remarkable innings as he put his versatile strokeplay on display. He first completed 1000 runs in ODI World Cup by dancing down the track and smoking Fazalhaq Farooqui for a maximum over deep extra cover. The 36-year-old became the joint fastest batter to score 1000 runs in the tournament reaching the landmark in 19 innings like David Warner.

He also registered the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the ODI World Cup reaching the landmark in just 63 balls. Rohit left behind former Indian opener Virender Sehwag who had achieved the feat in 81 balls vs Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup.

The Nagpur-born batter also rose to the top in the list of most sixes in international cricket leaving behind Chris Gayle’s tally of 553 maximums. Rohit now has 556 sixes to his name in international cricket from 473 innings.
Courtesy of his knock, India chased down the target of 273 in 35 overs and won the match by eight wickets. The Indian captain was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for his record-breaking innings.
