India began their campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with a game against Australia on Sunday, October 08 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After opting to bat first, Australia were bundled out for 199 as the Indian spinners spun a web around their batting lineup. In reply, the Rohit Sharma-led side were in all sorts of trouble as they found themselves on 2/3 in the first two overs. Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer all got dismissed for ducks.

However, the Indian innings was stabilized by Virat Kohli and KL Rahul who got involved in a century partnership to guide India to safe shores. Kohli began his innings rather slowly as he batted against the Australian pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The star batter finally got his innings going in the sixth over as he walked out of his crease to drive Hazlewood for a boundary down the ground. The star India batter elegantly drove the ball to score his first boundary of the innings and get himself going.
