In a blow to Mumbai's Ranji Trophy campaign, Shreyas Iyer is set to miss the upcoming quarter-final clash against Baroda due to a back spasm, according to a report in ESPNcricinfo. The in-form Shivam Dube, who has been a key player for Mumbai, will also be absent due to a side strain in the knockout game scheduled to begin on February 23 at home.
Iyer, who played a warm-up round in the Ranji Trophy before the Test series against England, faced exclusion from the last three Tests after experiencing back spasm following the second Test. The talented batter had previously battled a back injury, sidelining him from IPL 2023 until his return for the Asia Cup in September. Despite the setback, Iyer showcased his prowess in the ODI World Cup, amassing 530 runs at an impressive average of 66.25.
With the IPL on the horizon, Iyer will aim to recover swiftly to lead the Kolkata Knight Riders after missing the previous season. Meanwhile, Mumbai will feel the absence of Dube, who played a pivotal role with two centuries and two half-centuries in the current Ranji season.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring the absence of centrally contracted players, warning them against prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket. Mumbai's 16-man squad for the quarter-final, led by Ajinkya Rahane, includes all-rounder Musheer Khan, brother of India's recent debutant Sarfaraz Khan.
Mumbai face a challenging quarter-final without Iyer and Dube, relying on Rahane's leadership and the contributions of players like Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur, and Dhawal Kulkarni.
Mumbai squad: Ajinkya Rahane (capt), Prithvi Shaw, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal, Musheer Khan, Suryansh Shedge, Prasad Pawar (wk), Hardik Tamore (wk), Shardul Thakur, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Aditya Dhumal, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Awasthi, Dhawal Kulkarni, Royston Dias
