Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the concept of split captaincy might soon be adopted by the Indian side. Though Rohit Sharma is the all-format skipper, he has not led India in T20Is since the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022 in November. Instead, Hardik Pandya has been handed the responsibilities for the shortest format, while Rohit oversees the ODI and Test formats.
Chopra feels that Rohit Sharma might continue captaining in Tests till the World Test Championship 2023, but the team might see a change in ODI captaincy after the World Cup later this year. Chopra feels that Hardik Pandya might lead the Men in Blue next year at the T20 World Cup 2024, but the chances of the all-rounder getting the ODI captaincy are less.
We will not see a single captain for all formats just yet: Chopra
Speaking of the players whom he thinks are the right choices for India’s ODI captaincy, Chopra names two youngsters - Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant - as he said:
“I don't think we will see a single captain for all formats just yet, I think those days are over. Rohit Sharma will be the Test team's captain till the WTC, that's not going to change - it is going to stay like that,” Chopra said on Jio Cinema.
“Hardik Pandya is currently the captain in the T20 format, and I think he will continue to do so and in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, you will see Pandya be the captain of the Indian team. In One-Day cricket, Rohit Sharma will continue to be the captain till the World Cup. But I think in the long term, in terms of India's captaincy, it will be Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. These are my two candidates for India's captaincy in the future,” he further said.
Earlier, senior wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik had also opined that India could adopt split-captaincy if the opportunity presents itself. Karthik said that the team should take a decision based on the result of the ODI World Cup, and that Rohit Sharma should continue as team India’s all-format skipper till then because the team isn’t playing many T20Is in the build up.
