Shubman Gill is a special player who will be a fine leader: Kane Williamson

Shubman Gill had a forgettable Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2024. He was named the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) for the first time, however, the team finished at the seventh position in the league. There was plenty of scrutiny related to his captaincy, but he had the backing of the franchise as they retained him as captain before the start of IPL 2025.

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson shared a different perspective about Gill. The former Titans player said Gill's communication skills were quite clear, which is an important aspect of being a captain. Williamson reckoned that Gill has some "strong leadership qualities" and a "great cricketing brain".

"He's a very well put together human. A great cricketing brain and cares about his team-mates. He's very sure on how he wants to go about his business, which I think it's a really strong leadership quality and quite infectious, so there's no surprises really that he's touted for leadership for some of the Indian sides in the near future," Williamson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Williamson praised Gill for putting in the much-needed effort into his training as a young cricketer. Gill has been maintained his fitness well, which is also evident from the way he fields. Moreover, he is also a solid timer of the ball and has a variety of shots in his armoury.

"When you watch him train and you watch him play, something that stands out is the time that he has. He's got so much time, whether the wicket's doing a little bit, whether he's facing guys bowling high speed or moving the ball, he's so still. He hits the ball in conventional areas, but very, very hard. He's a beautiful timer of the ball and has a lot of time," concluded Williamson.
