Shubman Gill will be an all-format player for India soon: Rohan Gavaskar
"He needs to be given the right opportunities because he has shown that he has got the ability to be an all-format player," Gavaskar said.
Former India international Rohan Gavaskar believes that Shubman Gill will be an all-format player for India in the near future. Ever since his U19 days, Gill has impressed many across the globe. It was because of his exceptional performance throughout the 2018 U19 World Cup that Gill was adjudged as the Player of the Tournament.
Further, his knock of 91 at Gabba helped the team register a memorable win against Australia and retain the prestigious Border-Gavaskar trophy in 2020-21. He also made scored his maiden hundred in ODIs against Zimbabwe earlier in the year. However, Gill has still not got enough opportunities to represent India.
“He’s one of those who will be an all-format player. He’s showing that. He is more than capable of holding his own in white ball cricket. In red-ball cricket, his numbers are just astounding. Again, he is someone, when I say nurtured, I mean he needs to be given the right opportunities because he has shown that he has got the ability and there is no doubt about that,” said the 46-year-old exclusively on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’.
I’ve seen an absolute superstar: Amol Mazumdar to Rohan Gavaskar about Shubman Gill
Amol Mazumdar, during his NCA days, coached Gill. He took no time to understand the kind of talent that Gill has and mentioned the same to Gavaskar. The 47-year-old Mazumdar believed in Gill’s abilities with the bat and predicted the future of the cricketer.
“It was Amol Mazumdar who first mentioned Shubman Gill to me before he had even broken through because Amol has seen him at the NCA, he was going and coaching at the NCA and he came to me and said ‘Rohan, I’ve seen an absolute superstar! He’s someone who is definitely going to play for India. I have no doubt about it,’” Gavaskar narrated the story on the same show.
