SL vs AUS 2025: Nathan Lyon completes 550 Test wickets

Nathan Lyon is one of the best spinners to have come out of Australian soil after legendary Shane Warne, and the off-spinner achieved yet another accolade to prove the same today. Australia are playing Sri Lanka in the second Test at the Galle International Stadium, and Lyon commenced the innings with his overall Test wickets tally as 549. Dinesh Chandimal became his 550th victim as the bowler dismissed him with a tossed up delivery to a charging Chandimal as Beau Webster caught him at mid-off.

Coincidentally, Lyon started his Test career with a game against Sri Lanka in the same Galle stadium in 2011. He reached the milestone of 550 wickets in his 136th game and become one among other two legends of Australian cricket, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, to do so. While Warne ended his career with 708 wickets, McGrath picked 563 wickets.

The 37-year-old is now just 11 wickets away from overtaking McGrath to become the second-highest wicket-taker for Australia in the format. The former Australian pacer has 563 wickets in the format from 124 games at an average of 21.64.

The right-arm spinner went on to take the wickets of Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis to put the Australia in forefront to have a tight grip on the Test. Sri Lanka ended Day 3 on 211/8 with a lead of just 54 runs in reply to Australia's first innings lead of 157 runs.
