SMAT 2024: Mumbaikers do what they're known for to lift yet another silverware

The high-stakes Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 came to its fruitful end. Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh faced off in the summit clash of the tournament for a shot at glory. Both teams locked horns in the final at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Sunday, December 15 after thrashing out their respective opponents in the knockouts.
The game began with Madhya Pradesh coming in to bat first after losing the toss. The side got off to a subpar start as openers Arpit Gaud and Harsh Gawli scored three and two runs, respectively. After the underwhelming performance from the openers, Subhranshu Senapati and Harpreet Singh added 23 and 15 runs on the board, respectively, as well.
After the top order’s failure to go big, it was the knock of skipper Rajat Patidar that stabilised Madhya Pradesh’s innings. Captain Patidar scored an impressive 81* runs in 40 deliveries, helping his side post a total of 174 runs in the first innings of the game.
As for Mumbai, Shardul Thakur and Royston Dias were the highest wicket takers with two wickets to their name. Atharva Ankolekar, Shivam Dube, and Suryansh Shedge took one wicket each as well.

Aiming to chase down a target of 175 runs, Mumbai opened their innings with Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 10 and 37 runs, respectively. Skipper Shreyas Iyer was sent packing for a score of 16 runs in nine deliveries. After the subpar start, the knock of Suryakumar Yadav stabilised Mumbai’s innings.

The star batter scored 48 runs in 35 deliveries, with Atharva Ankolekar and Suryansh Shedge staying unbeaten on scores of 16 and 36, respectively. Mumbai chased down the target in 17.5 overs and won the game by five wickets.

After all seemed lost for Mumbai, Suryanshi Shedge played a quick-fire knock. He completed his 36-run knock in just 15 deliveries, hitting three sixes and three fours in the process as Mumbai lifted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for the second time.
