India recently completed a commendable tour of South Africa, as they drew the T20I and Test series while winning the ODI rubber 2-1. The tour ended with India winning the second and final Test in Cape Town by seven wickets. By this result, India became the first Asian side to beat South Africa in Cape Town. Also, Rohit Sharma and Co. became the second Indian team to avoid a Test series defeat in the Rainbow Nation.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly praised the Indian team while speaking to reporters recently in a public appearance. He said that people term the Men in Blue as a bad team when they lose just one match but they are 'very good'.
"India is a great team. When India loses people say as if the team is bad. See, they won the ODI series, T20 series 1-1, and Test series 1-1. What more? They are a very good side," Ganguly told reporters.
When asked if Rohit should lead the Indian team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA, Ganguly was quick to respond: "Yes, of course!" His response was the same when he was asked if Virat Kohli should also feature in the showpiece event.
Virat Kohli is an outstanding player: Sourav Ganguly
Kohli's last India appearance in the shortest format of the game was the T20 World Cup in the 2022 semifinal against England. The Asian giants lost that match by ten wickets. Since then, the legendary Delhi batter hasn't featured in any T20I. However, Ganguly feels that the long hiatus will not be a hindrance for Kohli.
When the Prince of Bengal said that Kohli should play in the impending T20 World Cup, one reporter reminded him that the 35-year-old hasn't played T20I cricket in the last 14 months.
"Nothing will happen. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player," Ganguly retorted.
Kohli skipped the limited-overs leg of the South Africa tour but returned for the Tests. He finished as India's highest run-getter in the Test series, scoring 172 runs in four innings, at an average of 43.
