SA Squad 2023 Player List: Complete South Africa (SA) Squad and Players List for ODI World Cup 2023
South Africa have added Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams as replacements of injured Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala.
South Africa (SA) have named their 15-member squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup on Setpember 5. The Proteas will be led by Temba Bavuma in the impending ODI World Cup, which is set to be held in India from October 5.
Captain Temba Bavuma, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Rassie van der Dussen are the specialist batters in the line-up while Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen are the two wicketkeeping options in the side with Tristan Stubbs missing out.
Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo*, Lizaad Williams*, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are the pace options included in the squad, while Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi will handle the spin-bowling department. Phelukwayo and Williams were late additions to the squad as replacement for the injured Anrich Nortje (back) and Sisanda Magala (knee) who both were ruled out of after being named in the squad. Notably, Williams was the highest wicket-taker for South Africa in their most recent T20I series against Australia, also missed out. Meanwhile, the talented Dewald Brevis could not find a spot in the side.
South Africa recently beat Australia 3-2 in the home ODI series after being 0-2 behind. Temba Bavuma and Co. will now play two warm-up matches against Afghanistan and South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram ahead of the ODI World Cup. In the showpiece event, they will begin their campaign against Sri Lanka on October 7 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
“It’s great having a mix of experienced players and players who will be competing in their first 50-over World Cup - you get that sort of exuberance of excitement to be doing something for the first time. Similar to the level of experience, we have endeavoured to curate a well-balanced group of players and skill, that will allow us to effectively adapt to the conditions in India. Under the leadership of Temba and the senior group, I have the utmost faith this squad will make South Africa proud," Proteas head coach Rob Walter said.
